FAQ

1) What happens during an individual dance/movement therapy session?

Sessions typically involve a combination of talking and movement. Each session is individualized so we can work together to create safety and find ways of moving and talking that are comfortable. The process of therapy follows your pace and builds on your strengths as we address changes or problems your are experiencing in your life. Movement props (balls, scarves, music, stretch bands, parachutes, puppets, etc...) are often used to explore and understand the issues that brought you to therapy. I respond to your movement and talking by witnessing, joining
with your movement, or talking with you.

2) What happens during a group dance/movement therapy session?

Similar to the components of an individual session above, a group would include anywhere between 3-25 people sharing in the same movement experience. Goals are developed in the beginning of the group through a movement warm-up by both participants and therapist. The middle part of the group is used to work on the goals or build on the themes presented. For example, if a geriatric population wants to reminisce about the good ol' days and talk about the problems they face aging, a movement activity would be facilitated to incorporate these goals. With the special needs population, the group would be encouraged to use creative movement and explore ways to dance that make them feel good about themselves. Groups always end with a closure where participants have an opportunity to talk about the group experience and how it affected them personally. A closing movement ritual might occur with some groups that provides consistency and flow to the weekly group. In You and Me Baby, the class always ends with the same goodbye song. Children and caregivers always know what to expect, which offers security and stability to the class atmosphere.

3) Why the mixed ages in the You and Me Baby class?

Research has proved that young children learn best when surrounded by other children of varying ages. The babies will study and mimic actions from the older children while the older children experience enhanced self-esteem and confidence as they proudly demonstrate their expertise in each task.              Learn More about You and Me Baby.

4) What is the cost of your services?

Classes set up through the recreation centers or dance schools for You and Me Baby range from $25-$60 a month depending on the location.

The price for an individual or group dance/movement therapy session arranged through me varies between $50-$100.  For more information on booking/scheduling for individual or group sessions,

Suzy's work with special needs children will be featured on The Art of Living, "The Art and The Young" episode.  This video shoot filmed by AMS Production Group at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, TX on March 1, 2007 occurred during the hospital's 6 week 'Chance to Dance' program for  children with disabilities. This program is a collaboration with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and The Dance Council. The Art of Living is a 26-part series that will air nationwide beginning this winter on New Leaf TV, a network devoted to healthy lifestyles and wellness.  The program is based on the belief that self-expression and the pleasures we derive from artistic pursuits are integral to a balanced life. Stay tuned for the dates and times of when it will be aired on TV!
